Laboring Mama

Birth Center & Home Birth

Numerous studies show giving birth at home or in a free-standing birth center is a safe option for healthy low-risk women with normal pregnancies. Giving birth in a non-hospital setting creates the ideal environment for a natural, low-intervention, physiologic birth.

As a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), serving hundreds of Virginia families since 2009, Kim is an expert in out-of-hospital birth. Her priority is to provide you with the best service and most current information to keep your family as healthy and safe as possible.

Prenatal Care

Prenatal Care

Birth Outside the Box offers comprehensive prenatal care, based upon the Midwives Model of Care. You will actively participate in you care, sharing in decision making every step of the way, working as a team with your midwife to optimize your health and the health of your baby, and planning the beautiful family-centered birth you want. Prenatal Care with Birth Outside the Box includes:

  • Prenatal Visits - Monthly until about 28 weeks, then twice monthly until about 36 weeks, and then weekly until the birth.
  • Electronic Health Record - You will have 24/7/365 access to your complete health record, including copies of progress notes and any labs and ultrasounds.
  • Personalized Care - Prenatal visits are about an hour in length, and include more than the usual wellness assessments. Kim will get to know you as a person and understand how to customize your care to meet your unique needs. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, Kim will look at the big picture and work with you as you make your decisions about choices for your care.
  • Access to Your Midwife - As a Birth Outside the Box client, you will be able to have unlimited telephone, email, and text message access to your midwife.

Postpartum & Baby

As a midwife, Kim's scope of practice includes low-risk women and their normal newborns. Your care with Birth Outside the Box includes the following Postpartum & Baby Care Services:

  • Immediate Postpartum - After your baby is born, the midwife and birth assistant will be assessing you and your baby to make sure everything is normal, help you establish breastfeeding, and will stay with you until you and your baby are ready for them to leave. This is generally about 2-4 hours after the birth.
  • The First 72 Hours - Kim will be available by phone/text/email to answer your questions, and she will come visit you at home to check on you and your baby. During this time, she will do a full newborn exam and the newborn metabolic screening (PKU test).
  • The First 2 Weeks - Sometime within 2 weeks after the birth, Kim will see you again for another visit. This will be another opportunity to work through any breastfeeding challenges, check the baby's growth, and make sure your own healing is proceeding normally.
  • The First 6 Weeks - Around 6 weeks postpartum, Kim will see you for a final postpartum visit. At this visit, she'll check both you and the baby again, and can do a well woman visit for you, including a pap smear, if needed.

Kim Pekin

About Kim Pekin, CPM

I am the mother of seven children, two by marriage and five by birth. My oldest children are in in their 20's, and my youngest child is in elementary school. I’ve had three of my babies in the hospital, and my last two babies were born at home with midwives. My husband and I have lived in western Loudoun County for over 15 years now, but I have lived all over the United States. I grew up mainly in the mountain west, and moved to Virginia in 1995.

My Education and Training

My life path has taken many twists and turns over the years. I graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1995. I worked in the corporate world for several years before starting my own natural parenting business (Natural Family Boutique) in 2002. I became a La Leche League Leader in 2001, and was appointed the Coordinator of Leader Accreditation for Virginia and West Virginia in 2002.

In 2007, after my youngest was born at home, I decided the time was right to become a midwife. I enrolled in National Midwifery Institute, a MEAC-Accredited school of midwifery. I apprenticed with an experienced midwife who had a busy home birth practice, and was able to complete my graduation requirements in 2009 and become a CPM and Virginia Licensed Midwife. I continued to work together with my mentor, serving hundreds of families through NOVA Natural Birth Center, which we co-founded in 2011. Now, through Birth Outside the Box, I have returned to my roots as a home birth midwife and am serving my community, helping families have the care I valued so much as a mother myself.

Passion for Birth Advocacy

I am deeply committed to giving back to the midwifery community so that midwives can
continue their work to help families who choose out of hospital births. Nationally, I serve on the Board of Directors for the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM), which is the organization that sets the standards for the CPM credential. On a more local level, I have been appointed by the governor to serve as vice-chair of the Virginia Board of Medicine’s Advisory Board on Midwifery, and I am a member of the  Virginia Midwives Alliance, where I serve as its Director of Education. I am a member of the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives and the Midwives Alliance of North America

Why I'm a Midwife

I take great joy in helping families with their pregnancies and births. Being a midwife is a lot more than just being there to catch babies. I am blessed to be able to help you through the challenges, as well as share in your joys and victories. I love getting to know the families I serve, and continuing to be part of their lives well after the 6 week postpartum visit. The families I help become part of my extended family. I feel honored to be present at the moment your baby is born, to witness his or her discovery of the world, and to watch as you fall deeply in love with each other. As a midwife, I believe it is of the utmost importance to ensure that birth is a peaceful and gentle transition for your child to enter the world. Birth sets the tone and creates the context for a person’s entire life experience. An important part of the midwife’s job is to honor the baby’s journey, respecting his need for gentle handling, and helping him to bond with his parents and siblings. Thank you for considering inviting me to share in this most important time in your lives.
